October has events covering places far afield, from Antarctica to North Korea.
This month is rife with great global Film Fests: two made the list, but let’s not forget the Social Justice Film Festival! The SJFF has a great Food Justice in Focus this year.
Climate Change is getting some serious attention, and you can take that momentum to the streets at the People’s Climate March. It’s October, but luckily Seattle protesting weather should be pretty mild, thanks to… climate change, right? (Sighhh…)
Well, I know just what will cheer you up: some amazing Music, Comics and Film. Every month seems to include some Bollywood these days, but a Bollywood Halloween Party? That I’ve gotta see!
1. Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club
Now that Cuba is more accessible, it may be easy to forget what a big deal it is that the incredibly talented members of the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club are playing here. This all-star lineup includes Omara Portuondo, Eliades Ochoa, Guajiro Mirabal, Barbarito Torres, Jesus “Aguaje” Ramos. (As an aside, I once worked a movie theater in which we showed Buena Vista Social Club to the players for the first time — they were very kind!) This is their “Adios Tour”, so don’t miss it, or you’ll have to travel to Cuba to catch them!

2. Seattle Latino Film Festival
The Latino Film Festival is now in its seventh year, featuring Peruvian Cinema this year. The SLFF plays films and features filmmakers and stars from many Ibero-American countries including Cuba, México, Costa Rica, Paraguay and more. You’re bound to see some unique film in this mix.

3. St. Demetrios Greek Festival
The St. Demetrios Greek Festival, now in its 55th year, has become a huge celebration of Greek food, music, dancing and culture. Traditional food includes lamb, calamari, loukoumathes, and of course baklava! Song and dance fill a great outdoor tent, so the party can go on rain or shine.

4. Community Dialogue: Talking Race, Identity & Racism
A series of Community Dialogues on Race and Family start with this month’s discussion on Race, Identity and Racism. The keynote will be given by Sharon H. Chang, our Globie winner for Social Justice Commentator of the year. Sharon is author of Raising Mixed Race: Multiracial Asian Children In a Post-Racial World, amongst many other great writings. Youth Undoing Institutionalized Racism will kick off the events, and Youth Speaks Seattle will perform poetry at each event.

5. Seattle South Asian Film Festival
Fresh from Tasveer founder Rita Meher’s win for Globalist of the Year, we absolutely must recommend the Seattle South Asian Film Festival! Tasveer provides year-round events, but their yearly film fest is the big one. Celebrating their 10th year, SSAFF is now the largest South Asian Film Festival in the US! This year they focus on Sri Lanka, and provide an impressive Symposium on Human Rights and the Politics of Filmmaking in South Asia. Tasveer events have never shied away from difficult topics, which give you a full view of the whole range of issues faced in the region.
